Area
Why are area conversion factors squared?
Area has two dimensions. Since 1 m = 100 cm, a square with a side of 1 m has an area of 100 cm × 100 cm, or 10,000 cm². A length conversion factor therefore cannot be used directly for area.
result = value × starting unit factor in m² ÷ target unit factor in m²
Area and the dimensions of a plot
The converter changes the unit of an existing area. For a rectangular plot, first calculate length × width with both lengths in the same unit. Hectares and ares are metric area units; the acre here uses the international foot.
Example: ares to hectares
A plot of 25 ares has an area of 2,500 m², or 0.25 ha. For 2 hectares, multiply by 10,000 to get 20,000 m².
