Volume
How do volume conversions work?
A liter contains 1,000 milliliters and equals one cubic decimeter. A cubic meter contains 1,000 liters. The converter compares units using their factors in liters.
result = value × starting unit factor in liters ÷ target unit factor in liters
US cups and other cups differ
The gallon here is the US liquid gallon, and the cup is the US customary cup of approximately 236.588 mL. These are different from an imperial gallon or a 250 mL metric cup. Converting volume into mass also requires the material’s density.
Example: milliliters to liters
For 750 mL, divide 750 by 1,000 to get 0.75 L. A recipe asking for 2 US customary cups uses 473.176473 mL.
