Temperature conversion formulas

Temperature scales have different zero points. Converting therefore needs more than a single multiplication factor: Celsius and Fahrenheit use an offset of 32 degrees, while Celsius and kelvin use an offset of 273.15.

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
K = °C + 273.15
Equivalent temperature examples

Temperature versus temperature change

This tool converts a temperature reading. A change of 10 °C corresponds to a change of 18 °F, without adding 32. The kelvin symbol is K, with no degree sign. For ordinary physical temperatures, the lower limit is 0 K, or −273.15 °C.

Example: Fahrenheit to Celsius

For 77 °F, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9: (77 − 32) × 5/9 = 25 °C. The same temperature is 298.15 K.
