Mass
How do mass conversions work?
Metric mass units use steps of 1,000: a kilogram contains 1,000 grams, and a gram contains 1,000 milligrams. Pounds and ounces use their defined relationships to the kilogram.
result = value × starting unit factor in kg ÷ target unit factor in kg
Which tonne and which ounce?
The tonne (t) here is the metric tonne of 1,000 kg, not a US short ton or an imperial long ton. An ounce (oz) is an avoirdupois mass ounce, not a troy ounce or a fluid ounce. Converting grams to milliliters also requires the material’s density.
Example: pounds to kilograms
For 10 lb, multiply 10 by 0.45359237 to get 4.5359237 kg. For 750 g, divide 750 by 1,000 to get 0.75 kg.
